In Uganda, marriage is still common among young girls. The median age at marriage among women is just before 18 years and it has been stable for the past 30 years.
A report by UNFPA (2013) indicated that the prevalence of child marriages is at 41% in Central Uganda, arranged marriages for adolescent girls without their consent are a common practice especially in the rural areas accounting for (24%) of girls in rural areas giving birth earlier than girls from urban areas (21%).
With support from Mundo Cooperante- (Right to be a Girl program), NCD is implementing 14 months’ project in Mukono District aimed at supporting school enrollment and retention of 100 vulnerable girls in public schools, empowering pupils with knowledge and skills to prevent teenage pregnancies and child marriages, strengthening the capacity of parents and local leaders to prevent child marriages by 2022.
